Low income families in Grundy and Kendall counties may be able to receive assistance for paying their rent. The Grundy County Housing Authority, in partnership with the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) and the Kendall County Housing Authority, have created the Kendall-Grundy Rental Housing Support Program. “It's been a long road to get here,” said Brent Newman, CEO of the Grundy County Housing Authority. “There were certainly times over the past couple of years when we thought it would never happen. However, it finally did, and we really do hope this is a help for those who need it." The IHDA is funding the program, which will provide rental assistance to households in Illinois. Newman said the program will not pay for things such as security deposits, emergency rental assistance or other costs with housing, but instead is covering only rent. Newman said they had found landlords to provide units for the program, and they will start accepting applications from potential tenants starting on today, July 10. Tenants who are approved will be low income and not receiving rental assistance from another source. “There are lots of things good things about this program,” said Newman. “One of the really nice features is that people who get help are able to live in apartments that protect their privacy. “Because the apartments are owned by private landlords, no one knows they're getting a helping hand unless they choose to tell." To be eligible, tenants must be at or below 30 percent of the Grundy County median income if applying for Grundy County, or 30 percent of the Kendall County median income if applying for Kendall County. In Grundy County, 30 percent of the median income for one person would be $15,300, and for a family of four it would be $21,840. In Kendall County, 30 percent of the median income for one person would be $17,610, and for a family of four it would be $25,170. “Our primary goal is to provide safe sanitary and decent units to extremely low income families,” said Ellen Garbincius, program administrator for the Kendall-Grundy Rental Housing Support Program. The pre-application must be postmarked no later than Saturday, July 19, with the program hoping to lease to accepted families by August 1.
