(MCT) — Police say officers shot and killed a suspected thief as he pulled a gun in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side late Sunday.
Ogden District officers confronted the man after responding to a call of a theft in progress at a building in the 1500 block of South Kostner Avenue about 11:50 p.m., police said.
As they patted him down, the suspect removed a handgun from his waistband, police said. There was a stsruggled and the officers shot at the suspect, killing him, police said in a statement said.
The man, in his 40s, was pronounced dead on the scene at 1:15 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. His name was not released.
Police union spokesman Pat Camden said the officers were searching outside the abandoned building when an officer spotted the suspect with a "bag of proceeds'' from the building.
The officer began to take him into custody and, while patting him down, felt a handgun in the suspect’s waistband, Camden said. They struggled as both reaching for the gun at the same time.
“At this point the cop draws his gun and shoots the offender before he can get to his gun freely,’’ Camden said.
The officers were not injured, and a weapon was recovered on the scene.
The shooting is being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority.
