CHANNAHON — Village residents wishing they had larger carts to handle their growing recycling volumes now have a chance to obtain larger wheeled containers.

The village of Channahon and Waste Management announced an enhancement to the recycling program that lets residents exchange, for a limited time, their existing 35-gallon recycling cart for a 64-gallon cart.

"We're trying to make Channahon's successful recycling program even better," said Village Administrator Joe Pena. "Offering residents greater capacity to recycle will improve the program, increase recycling volumes, and divert more materials from the landfill."

"We believe this new program will enhance Channahon's appearance and contribute to the village's long-term sustainability initiatives," he said.

The free upgrade program applies to recycling carts only. Residents must respond by May 15 or incur an exchange fee. Residents must contact the village of Channahon to change the size of their refuse cart.

To exchange a recycling cart, Channahon residents can go to the village website — www.channahon.org. — and  click on the "Recycling Cart Upgrade" link and follow the steps, or call the Waste Management customer service center at (800)796-9696. Residents may also fill in and return a postcard about the program Waste Management recently mailed to Channahon homes.

Waste Management will exchange the carts in late May and early June. Residents must exchange their existing 35-gallon cart to receive a new 64-gallon cart.
