Camps promise education, fun

Subjects include computer repair, digital media design and science

Student looking for some extra education and fun this summer may consider one of three camps that will be offered at Morris Community High School.

•    BASIC COMPUTER REPAIR AND NETWORKING. Instructor: Leanne Dammann; Dates: June 4 to 8; Time: 9 a.m. to noon; Location: Computer maintenance technology classroom at Grundy Area Vocational Center; Ages: Sixth through 10th graders; Minimum: 8 students; Maximum: 30 students; Cost: $20.

Campers will learn the basics of how a computer works by building one from individual parts. Campers will then install an operating system on the computer they built. Campers will also learn the basics of computer networking and how to make network cables. They will use these cables to connect the computers they built in a small network and communicate over this network. In addition to this, campers will learn some basic electronics principles and how to solder by creating a light-seeking robot. Extra instructions: Campers having special food needs should report this on their registration form. The last day of camp will be a showcase for parents/family members to visit the camp and see what their campers were able to produce during camp.

•    DIGITAL MEDIA DESIGN. Instructor: Joe Terrel; Dates: June 11 to 15; Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Location: GAVC; Ages: Sixth through 10th grades; Minimum: 5 students; Maximum: 20 students; Cost: $30.

Students will learn digital imaging and photo manipuation using Adobe Photoshop, web design using Adobe Dreamweaver and  video editing and green screen production using Adobe Premiere Pro. The will compile all projects using Adobe Encore to make a DVD. Students will also design and make their own T-shirt.

•    EXPERIENCE SCIENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY. Instructor: Celia Mistretta; Dates: June 4 to 8; Time: 9 a.m. to noon; Location: MCHS; Ages: Eighth through 12th grades; Minimum: 8 students; Maximum: 20 students; Cost: $50.

Students will complete hands-on science activities, projects and competitions designed to facilitate and increase the understanding of the science career fields in our community. The camp includes field trips; field trips may include Akzo Nobel, Morris Hospital/Morgue and Joliet Junior Planetarium. Contact MCHS for full description of camp trips.
