Drink to your health

You’ve probably heard some people say that drinking alcohol in moderation can be good for you. Well I’m happy to say this can sometimes be the case.

My husband and I are off to wine country this week to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary, and I plan on drinking to my health.

The definition of moderate drinking is usually one drink daily for women and two drinks daily for men. What qualifies as a drink? 12 oz. beer, 4-5 oz. wine or 1 oz. hard liquor (one shot).

Alcohol may increase HDL (good) cholesterol levels, which can help to reduce total and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.

According to the Mayo Clinic, alcohol may offer the following benefits:

- Reduce your risk of developing heart disease - Reduce your risk of dying of a heart attack - Possibly reduce your risk of strokes, particularly ischemic strokes - Lower your risk of gallstones - Possibly reduce your risk of diabetes

Obviously alcohol is not for everyone. If you don’t consume alcohol already, I’m not telling you to start.

If you are taking medications with warnings against alcohol, if you or someone else in your family has a history of alcohol abuse or if your physician has recommended against it, you should not consume alcohol.

If this is not the case, and you do enjoy a drink now and then, you can feel good knowing that you may be doing some good for yourself.

I plan to toast a delicious Pinot Noir to my health this week.
