GARDNER — Someday soon, students in the southern part of Grundy County could be graduating from GSWB High School.

The Gardner South Wilmington High School Board of Education, it was announced Friday, is beginning the process of exploring a name change for the high school located in Gardner, but serving students from multiple communities.

Over the years, there have been requests and inquiries regarding changing the name of Gardner South Wilmington High School. The latest exploration comes in response to a recent request from James Homa, the mayor of Braceville.

During a school board meeting last spring  Homa expressed his desire — and the desire of constituents with whom he had spoken — that “Braceville” be included in the name of the high school.

At the July 2012 meeting, The GSW school board directed Superintendent Michael Perrott to begin the process of gathering community input. Perrott is currently working on developing an online survey and other avenues to gather that input from the community.

The board expressed its desire to move cautiously, in order to make an informed decision. Board members expressed a belief that it is extremely important to allow any and all members of the Gardner South Wilmington High School District community an opportunity to share their views regarding a name change.

They also stressed to Perrott, however, that it is important that the identity and residency of persons wanting to express a viewpoint be collected. Perrott is, therefore, working to develop methods to collect this information in a written format. He has already collected several emails from community member regarding this potential change.

The board would also like to hold several meetings specifically to allow the community to express their views face-to-face with district officials.

Community members wanting to express an opinion regarding the inclusion of “Braceville” in the name of the school district may email or send a letter to Superintendent Perrott at or in care of Gardner South Wilmington High School, 500 East Main Street, Gardner, IL 60424.

To be considered in the process, emails/letters must include the names of the senders and the physical address of their residences.
