We can solve the problem by voting out all incumbents

“These are the times that try men’s souls,” written by the patriot Thomas Paine in 1777 seems to be an exact description of my feelings during this election year.

I have been reading, listening, and viewing negative ads about opponents, but I am not hearing one thing about what anyone is going to do about what we as a nation, a state, or local citizens are going to do about our problems.

Everything I hear is all about getting re-elected. And isn’t that a shame in today’s world?

In Washington they leave for a five-week vacation when they have not done one thing that I can see in the past three years other than bicker. Every time I pick up a paper or turn on the news or go to the computer, I see something else that they are throwing insults about.

Our infrastructure is falling apart, our postal system is bankrupt, our fellow citizens are losing their houses, and every single night people are being shot, knifed, and beaten in our cities.

In Springfield, they have argued since the distant past about what to do about being billions in debt. Billions!

Do our elected officials think we are fools? Or do they think we are too stupid to care?

The problem, I believe, is that our elected and appointed officials have forgotten that they are working for us. I believe that they believe that they are our leaders and, therefore, better than the rest of us and, therefore, deserve any and all perks that they can gather.

Our elected officials vote for their own raises. Can any other worker do that? Our officials vote for laws, but exempt themselves from those same laws. Don’t believe me? Get on Interstate 55 going south and watch the government license plates whiz by you like you are standing still.

Our elected officials vote themselves health insurance for part-time work. Any of you part-time workers out there doing the same?

Our D.C. officials get several five-week vacations a year. Who out there gets those kind of benefits?

I am not sure what others will be doing, but this year — and in following years — I will be voting for whomever is not in office. Not a one of them will ever vote for term limits. Not one! So our choice as citizens is to put into place our own term limits by using our vote.

Find out whom you are eligible to vote for, then find out who is in office and vote for whomever is running against them. They cannot be worse than what we have now.

Perhaps if we as a group can move enough of these parasites out of D.C. and out of Springfield, we can start to get things done instead of blaming someone else.

As for our appointed or hired officials, if they aren’t doing their jobs, send them packing. Think about this dear citizen — enough people in Kendall County signed a petition to lower taxes by 20 percent to have it placed on the next ballot.

According to the Kendall County Record not one official supported the idea. One even had the gall to say “he wants to see some research that says cutting 20 percent of the levy will keep some people from losing their homes.”

What planet do these folks live on? Our home values have fallen,  but our taxes have risen. How can that happen and people not ask for relief?

At least in my case, the ride for these uncaring, over-fed-at-the-public-trough officials is over. I plan to vote anyone who is in office out. My vote may not mean much by itself, but if every one of us goes to the polls and thinks about what it can be instead of what it is, we can cure what is wrong with our political situation and get back to running this country, this state, and our local communities.

Solve the problem citizens! Vote them all out!
