Harold E. Burger

DWIGHT, Ill. — Mr. Harold E. Burger, 92, of Dwight, Ill., peacefully passed away with his loving family by his side at 1:53 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at Heritage Health in Dwight.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at Hager Memorial Home, 201 W. Mazon Ave., Dwight. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, with a one-hour visitation prior to the service at the Dwight Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The Rev. Daniel Ognoski will officiate. Burial will be at Goodfarm Cemetery.

Mr. Burger was born May 12, 1920, on his family farm at Goodfarm to Martin G. and Louise (Hahn) Burger. He graduated from Dwight High School in 1938.

He married Lois N. Jackson on July 14, 1946, in Dwight. She preceded him in death on Jan. 26, 2009. Surviving are one brother, Ralph, of Bloomington, Ill.; two sons, Keith (Cecilia) Burger of Memphis, Tenn., and Bill (Shelly) Burger of Bourbonnais, Ill.; one daughter, Jan Burger of Kankakee, Ill.; two grandchildren, Meagan and Ryan Burger; and two step-grandchildren, Joann and Emily Weller.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Lois; his parents; three brothers, Walter, Leo and Helmuth Burger; and one sister, Helen Grieff.

Mr. Burger owned Smith’s Variety Store from 1951-58. He then worked at Fry’s Hardware Store and Kaiser’s Variety Store. He then went to work for 11 years as a custodian at Dwight Township High School, where he enjoyed working with the students and teachers. He retired in 1985. He was also a local sign painter and artist.

Mr. Burger was a member of the Lutheran Layman League. He was raised and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Goodfarm, and later belonged to the Dwight Emmanuel Lutheran Church. He loved music, his church and especially his family.

Harold will be missed by his family and everyone who knew him.
