SHS goes to great depths to make Homecoming a success

‘Under the Sea’-themed activities begin with parade on Sunday afternoon

SENECA — Seneca Township High School’s Homecoming week is about ready to set sail. The theme this year is “Under the Sea.”

Homecoming will kick off on Sunday, Sept. 30, with the parade on Main Street, starting at 3 p.m. from the Grade School South Campus.  This year’s grand marshal is Rodney Engstrom.

Engstrom started his teaching career at Bardoff High School, but after one year he moved to Seneca, where he completed 35 years at Seneca High School.

Engstrom was a math, PE, and driver’s education teacher, athletic director, business manager, and superintendent during his time at Seneca High School. He was well known as a coach of many teams of Seneca High School.

Engstrom was the first assistant varsity coach of the football team in 1971, and a continued to coach football for 11 seasons. He also coached basketball for 16 years, but Engstrom’s favorite sport was track, which he coached for 31 years of boys and girls teams.

He was the head coach for 22 of those years, where the team recorded more than 600 wins and more than 300 athletes participated in the state track meet.

Engstrom and his wife, Patti, were married in 1977 and have been for more than 35 years.  They have two sons and two wonderful daughters-in-law.

Each day of Homecoming week will give students a chance to dress and act a little bit out of the ordinary.

Monday will be “Class Color Day,” when freshmen will wear pink, sophomores will wear orange, juniors will wear purple, and seniors will wear blue.

Tuesday will be “Twin Day,” when students will dress like a friend.

Wednesday will be “Superhero Day,” whenstudents will dress as their favorite superheroes.

“Insane Irish Day” will be on Thursday, when students will wear white, green, and gold.  On Thursday afternoon, the student body and Staff will participate in the Irish Games, which will challenge the athletic and intellectual skills of the participants.

Seneca will take on Dwight High School in the football games on Friday night, Oct. 5, with the junior varsity starting at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity starting at approximately 7:45 p.m. There will be a presentation between games to honor the grand marshal, Rodney Engstrom.

During halftime of the varsity game, the presentation of the Homecoming Court and the announcement of the 2012 King and Queen will take place.

The Junior Homecoming Attendants are Ariel Brozovich, Mallory Misener, Austin Applebee, and Tommy Lovett. The Senior Homecoming Attendants are Jessica Elliott, Chelsie McCormick, Maddison Steep, Brian Bergeson, Logan Pifer, and Peyton Schrag.

The week will conclude with the Homecoming Dance at the high school from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.
