While local residents were enjoying their fill of corn dogs and pork chops on sticks on Friday, Sept. 28, Talty Chevrolet employees were making sure some of their neighbors had the basics to eat throughout the month of October.

The car dealership donated $650 and provided volunteers to Fill the Pantry for We Care of Grundy County. The volunteers helped unload 4,034 pounds of food that was ordered from Northern Illinois Food Bank and paid for with Talty’s donation.

“Our whole staff lives and works in Grundy County, so we see the benefits of We Care and what a great job they do for our community,” said Ken Talty of Talty Chevrolet.

“This has turned into an annual event and we look forward to coming down during Corn Festival to give back to this generous, supportive community.”

During the month since the previous Fill the Pantry, We Care had helped 230 families from its food pantry.

We Care receives a monthly delivery of food for the pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The NIFB is able to provide food to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores.

The month’s delivery included eight-ounce packages of bacon and veggie egg scramblers for 11 cents each, 15-ounce cans of low-sodium spaghetti sauce for 52 cents each, and 15-ounce cans of peas for 29 cents each.

In addition to the food that We Care purchases with the donations, the food pantry also receives food that is provided for free as part of the Emergency Food Program. The EFP provided four cases of whole chickens and eight cases of beef stew this month.

Upcoming Fill the Pantry sponsors include LyondellBasell and Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers.
If your organization is interested in sponsoring a Fill the Pantry date in 2013, please call the We Care office at (815) 942-6389 to find available dates.
