ROUNDUP: Morris third at Fall Classic

KANKAKEE — Behind the All-Tournament play of setter Katie Chatten, the Morris varsity girls volleyball team took third place at the Bishop McNamara Fall Classic over the weekend.

Morris defeated Lake Forest Academy 25-19, 25-16 behind 6 kills from Kendall Korte, 5 from JoAnna Nowicki and 16 assists from Chatten. It also won its second pool play match, 25-14, 25-9 over Wilmington, as Korte, Austin Thompson, Laney Torkelson and Taylor Vandenberg had 5 kills each and Chatten had 25 assists. Bradley-Bourbonnais defeated the Redskins 25-13, 17-25, 15-8 in their final pool-play match, though Korte and Nowicki had 7 kills each and Chatten totaled 28 assists.

In bracket play, Morris lost 25-14, 25-9 to Centennial in spite of 5 Torkelson kills. The Redskins recovered to top McNamara, 25-19, 25-20, for third place behind 10 kills and 8 digs from Korte and 30 assists from Chatten.

LAMOILLE — Six kills each from Abbey Akre and Taylor Krug paced the Lady Norse (18-4) Thursday in the Little 10 Conference Tournament championship. Melissa McNanna had 12 points and 2 aces, Kristina Nichols had 7 points and 5 aces and Lauren Tollefson had 15 assists for the champs.

GARDNER — Abby Horrie (5 aces, 4 digs) and Lexi Posing had 4 kills each Thursday for Gardner-South Wilmington (4-16, 3-6) in the River Valley Conference loss. Bryanna DeMoraes and Sam Schultz added 3 kills and Natalie Cash 8 assists.

GSW (12-8, 6-3) won 25-6, 25-16 at the sophomore level behind 4 kills from Makayla Residori and 2 kills, 4 aces and 8 assists from Miranda Residori. Three kills each from Kayla Garrett and Mady Patten paced the Lady Panthers (14-5) in a 25-6, 25-20 freshman win.


Sterling Invitational

STERLING — Megan Crouch's 12th-place time of 18:28 led Mnooka, with 90 points, to a second-place finish among 23 girls teams at the 63rd annual meet Saturday. Other counters for the Indians were Caleigh Beverly (17th; 18:47), Laura Simon (20th; 18:53), Kaitlyn Chetney (22nd; 18:55) and Moira McAsey (22nd; 18:55).

"This was another strong showing by this girls team. They are running great," Minooka coach Kevin Gummerson said. "I was very pleased to have a 30-second split, to finish 6 in the top 25 and 6 girls run under 19 minutes."

Joey Santillo placed fifth in 15:21 in the boys race, leading the Indians to fourth place, with 153 points, among 24 teams. They also counted the times of Alex Pierce (seventh; 15:31), Cam Knudsen (ninth; 15:35), Cheyne Robinson (59th; 16:32) and Henry Bugajski (73rd; 16:45).

"The boys continue to improve each and every week," Gummerson said. "It was great to see them take an aggressive approach to this race, and then they were able to back it up over the last mile."
