ICC plugs residents into Basics

Electric Choice Basics shows difference in supplier options

More than 1 million residential customers in Illinois now purchase their electric supply form a Retail Electric Supplier rather than from the utility. Yet, many consumers still have questions about what electric choice is and if it’s a good idea to switch to a different supplier.

The Illinois Commerce Commission has information to help consumers understand their choices and shop for electric supply. The Electric Choice Basics from the ICC provides consumers with answers to the most often asked questions about electric choice.

The ICC website, www.pluginillinois.org, provides consumers with more detailed information as well as a simple means to compare prices to make the most informed choice when considering a retail electric supplier.

The ICC website includes a list of licensed retail electric suppliers and their current product offers in an easy to use format to compare prices and terms as well as a list of questions to ask suppliers before making a final decision.

The website also includes information about electricity rates, real-time electricity pricing options, and ways to conserve electricity regardless of whether electricity is supplied by a retail supplier or the utility.

Consumers may also contact the ICC with questions about electric choice or to report any problems or complaints by calling 1-800-524-0795 or through the ICC website at www.icc.illinois.gov/consumer/complaint.

It pays to be informed. Make sure you understand the Electric Choice Basics for simple information about alternative energy choices and then visit the ICC’s website at  www.pluginillinois.org to compare prices or gather more information.
