To the Editor:
On Oct. 3, 2012, I had the privilege of being a part of the Honor Flight Chicago to Washington, D.C. The many volunteers giving their time and effort to ensure that 85 WWII Veterans were given special care and treatment for a day is something not one of us will ever forget.
Nor will I ever forget that my granddaughter, Kristi McNichol, made all this happen for me and also was able to travel along as my guardian.
The many cards, letters, and thank you notes I have received (175 to date) is most overwhelming to say the least!!!!
The reception at Midway Airport on our return late that night was another very emotional part of the day. The banners, the bagpipes, the many sailors and soldiers standing at attention, the estimated 2,000 to 3,000 well wishers were all very special.
The frosting on the top for me was to have my wife, my four children and their spouses, most of my grandchildren, my 4-year-old great-grandson, Murray, plus Rob and Sally Maierhofer, Kent Weber, and FFA students from Seneca High School, Barb Stanger and Judy Spicer from First Midwest Bank, and Debbie Worley all there to welcome me home.
This honor went beyond my expectations and every part of this experience tugged at the old heart strings. This was an unforgettable day and one I will cherish always.
May this short note be my sincerest THANK YOU to each one!
