BCS standings: Irish hold top spot

(MCT) — Notre Dame will likely play the winner of the SEC championship in the BCS title game in January the latest BCS standings reveal.

The Fighting Irish, the only eligible unbeaten team in the FBS, are ranked No. 1 in the BCS standings for the second consecutive week and their season is over. Notre Dame (12-0) will play in its first-ever BCS title game in Miami against the second-ranked team in the final BCS standings next week.

Alabama and Georgia are ranked No. 2 and No. 3 and meet on Saturday in the SEC championship game.

Florida is No. 4 in the standings after the Gators finished their season with a 37-20 win over Florida State. The Oregon Ducks are one spot behind at No. 5

The Seminoles dropped to No. 13 after losing to the Gators. FSU plays in the ACC championship game against Georgia Tech on Saturday.

Notre Dame’s last national title came in 1988.
