Chanooka Wish Foundation’s Thanksgiving distribution, which included a turkey, laundry basket filled with food items and bakery goods, was held Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Channahon Village Hall.
Members of Minooka Federated Woman’s Club and Channahon Police Department Cadets helped Carolyn Karanda with the project. Karanda is president and co-founder of Chanooka Wish Foundation, which she started five years ago with the help of neighbors and friends.
Names of the families the organization helps are supplied by Channahon and Minooka village offices, schools, churches and by word of mouth. On learning of an immediate problem, families are helped without question. Subsequent aid is giving after the family has completed an information form and has been interviewed.
The organization is funded by gifts from businesses, fundraisers, bake sales, etc. Distributions have been made yearly at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and this year school supplies were provided for students in need.
“We’re growing along with the peoples’ needs,” Karanda said, noting that one family calls them their “angels."
Their Christmas program, Adopt a Family, is in full swing.
