Sox's Konerko on Team USA list for WBC

(MCT) — NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Paul Konerko has a big scar on his left wrist after undergoing surgery two months ago.

But Konerko apparently is healthy enough to be placed on a provisional list for Team USA for the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

The final roster is expected to be announced later this winter, but the Sox could have representation in other participating countries.

Although it became a surprise to some, pitcher Andre Rienzo will compete for Brazil after pitching the first game for his country in a qualifying tournament last month in Panama. Rienzo told the Tribune two months ago that it would be an honor to represent his country despite the fact he could miss time to compete for a major league job in spring training.

Left-hander Jose Quintana (Columbia) and Hector Santiago (Puerto Rico) could participate, although Quintana threw a professional-high 183 innings last season and showed signs of fatigue. Santiago is preparing as a starter and is pitching in the Puerto Rican Winter League.

"It’s tough because you get conflicted," general manager Rick Hahn said. "You're wearing your White Sox hat and you want them under your watchful eye and wearing your industry hat. And  I know this is a big event and has international appeal, and you want to do what you can to support it. I'm paid to wear a White Sox hat right now."
