(MCT) — CHICAGO — A 26-year-old woman came home on Christmas night to find a man she had never seen before folding her laundry and cleaning her apartment in Chicago’s Irving Park neighborhood, police said.
A judge set bail at $125,000 Wednesday for Paul Edge, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office. Edge, 58, a registered sex offender, was charged with violation of sex offender registration, a felony, and a misdemeanor count of criminal trespass, authorities said.
The woman told the Chicago Tribune she had been on Christmas holiday but returned home with her fiance to her home and found Edge sitting cross-legged on her living room folding her laundry and cleaning her apartment, police said.
“It was pretty scary,” she said.
The woman said they both sensed something was off when they saw a piece of her luggage outside the home. Her fiance walked in first, and they both spotted him.
“He was going through my laundry and folding my sports bra,” she said. “He said he was here to do the dishes.”
But Edge actually created a mess, leaving 15 cigarette butts in the kitchen, she said.
The woman called police and officers got to the scene and interviewed Edge, who told them someone let him inside and asked him to clean the home, police said. He was arrested at 9:40 p.m. CST at the home.
Edge is a sexual predator who was convicted in Lake County of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a 15-year-old, a crime that occurred when he was 51, according to the Illinois Sex Offender website.
