Berkot’s Super Foods is selling bags of non-perishable food items in each of its stores to be donated in turn to local food pantries during the holiday season.
Beginning Nov. 1 and ending Jan. 1, 2013, each of the 13 Berkot’s locations has two types of food bags on sale — a $5 bag and a $10 bag. Berkot’s customers can purchase a bag of their choosing and Berkot’s will then donate the bags to help families in need.
This is the second year Berkot’s has organized this type of donation. Last year, in 12 stores, Berkot’s customers purchased 1,912 bags throughout the entire campaign. As of Dec. 26, Berkot’s employees and customers, now in 13 locations, have purchased $23,290 worth of bags.
Each bag has been pre-arranged. The $5 bag includes a 15.25-ounce can of whole kernel corn, a 14.5-ounce can of cut green beans, a 16-ounce can of pork and beans, a 7.25-ounce macaroni and cheese dinner, a 10.75-ounce can of tomato soup, a 10.5-ounce can of chicken noodle soup, a 14.5-ounce can of chicken broth, a 14.5-ounce can of diced tomatoes, and a 7.5-ounce box of corn muffin mix.
In addition to the items listed above, the $10 bag includes a 15-ounce can of tomato sauce, a 29-ounce can of peach slices, a 15.5-ounce can of red kidney beans, a 16-ounce package of saltine crackers and a 12-ounce container of oyster crackers.
“The generosity we have seen from our customers throughout this campaign has been incredible,” said Jeff Jackson, Berkot’s Buyer. “Those of us at Berkot’s are very pleased to be able to help people in need in the communities we serve this time of year.”
The list of food pantries benefiting from Berkot’s donations includes the Coal City Food Pantry, the Manteno Food Pantry, the Livingston County Community Pantry, the Kuzma Care Cottage in Wilmington the Church of Hope Food Pantry in Gardner and more.
