Review of Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan scheduled

The Grundy County Hazard Mitigation Plan Steering Committee has completed the seven-month process of developing a Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan that will be submitted to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for approval.

The plan includes projects to mitigate risks from natural disasters that impact Grundy County.

Once FEMA approves the plan, the county and all participating jurisdictions will be eligible to apply for FEMA funding streams for mitigation projects.

The steering committee will be hosting a public meeting to review the plan at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17,in the County Board Meeting Room at the Administration Center, 1320 Union St., Morris.

According to plan facilitator Carrie McKillip, University of Illinois Extension educator, the planning process proceeded smoothly in Grundy County.

“The steering committee spent seven months, with a meeting each month, researching various areas, donating a great deal of time to the process. Also, Committee Chair Jim Lutz, Grundy County Emergency Management Agency director, spent countless hours guiding the process, distributing surveys, contacting organizations, as well as attending every meeting, focus group and public forum,” McKillip said. “We are very lucky to have the level of community input and engagement we have had in this process, and are very happy with the resulting plan.”

After the public meeting, the plan will be submitted for FEMA approval and then approval of the participating jurisdictions. Once formally adopted, all participating jurisdictions will be eligible to apply for FEMA funding for mitigation projects.
