Report: Illini hire offensive coordinator

(MCT) — CHAMPAIGN — Reports Sunday indicate that former Western Michigan University head football coach Bill Cubit will be the new offensive coordinator at the University of Illinois.

ESPN.com confirmed that Cubit was Illini head coach Tim Beckman’s choice.

Cubit would replace Chris Beatty, who will not be retained. Billy Gonzales, who had the title co-offensive coordinator last season, would concentrate on coaching the wide receivers and Cubit would do the play-calling.

Cubit was head coach at Western Michigan for eight seasons, including 2012. He had a 51-47 record and took the team to three bowl games.

But he was fired after Western Michigan went 4-8 in 2012, including a 24-7 loss at Illinois.

He has been offensive coordinator at Western Michigan (1997-99), Missouri (2000), Rutgers (2001-02) and Stanford (2004).
