Morris NHS helping I Care International

Each month members of the Morris Chapter of the National Honor Society gather in a classroom to wash, measure, label and bag hundreds of pairs of used eyeglasses.

In February, many people in Honduras will receive those glasses for free and will be able to see more clearly.

These NHS students are helping the I Care International organization.

It gives glasses and hearing aids to people in need in Central America, Mexico, South America, and the United States.

The organization was founded in Illinois in 1989 by two optometrists, Dr. Philip Ortiz and the late Dr. Charles D. Cools.

The old glasses are donated through cooperating optometrists and at fundraising events. The Lions Club also contributes some of the used glasses that it collects.

Barbara Rath, NHS advisor, worked with Dr. Ortiz to introduce work for the organization as this year’s service project. The students felt this project was one that warranted service, which is one of the four pillars upon which the NHS is founded.

This year’s seniors started the project in the fall. When the new junior and senior students are inducted in February, they will continue the work until school ends in May.

Next fall, the project will continue with the new NHS senior chapter members.
