About 15 minutes before workers would have showed up for work at Quality Millwork, the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District was fighting a heavy fire in the building.
The call came in at about 6:44 a.m. Saturday morning, Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said. At 7 a.m., employees would have started work at the building, located at 7075 Lisbon Road. A passerby called it in when they saw fire in the metal building.
The company sells windows, doors, trim and other products for houses, Steffes said. Once on scene, the fire department had to cut a lock to enter the company's parking lot and then force entry into the building, which had heavy smoke and heat conditions.
After about 40 minutes the fire was under control and there were no injuries.
Morris, Minooka, Troy, Channahon, Mazon, Lisbon, Newark, Seneca and Braidwood fire departments all assisted Morris. MABAS 15 and Illinois Fire Marshal investigators were also on scene, as well as the Grundy County Sheriff's Department since the building is not in the city limits.
Grundy County EMA also brought out the mobile communication van to help with communication between the multiple companies.
"The firemen just did a fabulous job of keeping the fire from totally consuming this building," Steffes said. "They were faced with extreme conditions and they performed flawlessly. I couldn't be more proud of them."
Preliminary estimates on the damage are at about $250,000. The cause is being investigated, but does not look suspicious, the chief said.
Investigators are looking at some storage racks as a possibility of where the fire started. Everything on the racks was consumed by the fire, so it was unclear Saturday morning what was on the racks.
Steffes gave credit to the owners of the building for their cleanliness and organization.
"Their way of storing the materials greatly reduced the fire consumption of the building," he said.
The materials were spaced out throughout the building rather than kept piled together. This stopped the fire from growing and helped firefighters to extinguish the fire.
