On Friday, Jan. 25, Mike and Norma Miller sponsored We Care's Fill the Pantry date.

The Millers gave a $650 donation that provided the majority of the funds that allowed We Care to order 5,756 pounds of food from Northern Illinois Food Bank. The remaining funds were provided through a mini-grant from United Way of Grundy County.

UWGC Board members also provided the volunteer labor to unload the truck and stock the shelves.

When asked why he chose to Fill We Care’s pantry, Mike Miller said, “It does me more good than the people receiving the food.”

“United Way of Grundy County does more than just provide funds for our 27 partner agencies. We also like to lend a helping hand whenever we can,” said Karen Nall, executive director of the United Way of Grundy County.

During the month since the previous Fill the Pantry, We Care had helped 266 families from its food pantry.

We Care receives a monthly delivery of food for the pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The NIFB is able to provide food to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores.

The month’s delivery included 16-ounce boxes of pancake mix for 75 cents each, 23-ounce boxes of toaster pastries for 16 cents each, and 33-ounce bags of cereal for 50 cents each.

In addition to the food that We Care purchases with the donations, the food pantry also receives food that is provided for free as part of the Emergency Food Program. The EFP provided chicken leg quarters, fresh Bosc pears, canned peaches, carrots, cranberry sauce, beef stew, pork patties, orange juice, peanut butter, turkey roasts and diced tomatoes.

Upcoming Fill the Pantry sponsors include LyondellBasell employees, the family and friends of Robyn White, and New Community Christian Church.
