Officials continue investigation into cause of house fire

High-value loss, future safety are high priorities

The Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District along with the Illinois State Fire Marshal Office continue the investigation into the cause and origin of the Feb. 5 fire at 5805 Barrington Road.

A team of local, state and independent cause and origin investigators and engineers are investigating the exact cause of the incident. The investigation of the site will continue for at least the next two weeks.

“We are working to complete our investigation as soon as possible so the site can be cleared of all debris for the safety and health of the neighborhood,” Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said.

Steffes said the high-value loss of property and future fire safety are all high priorities in determining the cause and origin of the fire.

“I want to assure the residence of the Heather Field Subdivision the investigation has not identified any current life safety hazards existing outside the property lines of the original fire building,” Steffes added.

The fire started with an explosion and destroyed the Barrington Road house belonging to a couple who were out of town.

Steffes said the insurance company placed the loss of the house, garage, cars and contents at $1 million.

The call came in at about 3:17 a.m. Tuesday as a garage fire at 5805 N. Barrington Road. The fire completely engulfed the house.

No one was injured in the incident and neighbors did not have to be evacuated.

Minooka, Coal City, Wilmington, Lisbon, Mazon, Newark and Marseilles fire departments all assisted.
