James F. Melick

Mr. James F. Melick, 91, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, with his loving family by his side.

Born April 16, 1921, Jim was the son of Edith (Haynes) and Walter Melick in Newark, Ohio, but he lived most of his life in Oregon, Ohio.

Jim married Betty (Kapff), the love of his life, on Jan. 24, 1942. They lived most of their married life in Oregon, Ohio, moving to Morris in 2000.

Jim was honorably discharged from the Army in 1946 with the rank of Master Sergeant. He retired from BP Amoco in 1982.

Jim's hobbies included woodworking, making grandfather clocks, winemaking and "tinkering" in his workshop. His love of traveling and hiking took him and Betty to every state, numerous times, in their motorhome.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Betty, who he was married to for 71 years; daughter, Judy Stemen; granddaughter, Melissa (Al) Pilch; grandson, Don (Jen) Stemen; great-grandchildren, McKenzie and Madelyn Pilch, Anna and Jonah Stemen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Harold and Gene.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Peace Lutheran Church. Pastor Kris Zierke will officiate.

As it was Jim's request cremation rites have been accorded.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Peace Lutheran Church or Grundy Volunteer Hospice.

Fred C. Dames Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. For more information, call (815) 942-5040 or visit the website www.fredcdames.com.
