A volunteer picks up two boxes of food items Friday, Feb. 22, when LyondellBasell employees donated $650 for 5,406 pounds of food to fill We Care of Grundy County’s pantry.

LyondellBasell employees donated $650 to help We Care of Grundy County purchase 5,406 pounds of food from Northern Illinois Food Bank and provided volunteers Friday, Feb. 22, to unload the truck and stock the shelves.

“It’s so gratifying that after six years of this partnering with We Care to fill the pantry. It’s wonderful  to see the enthusiasm in supporting and assisting with these food deliveries hasn’t diminished,” said Larry Zazeski of LyondellBasell. “ We enjoy this opportunity to help provide food to those in greatest need in our community.”

During the month since the last Fill the Pantry, We Care has helped 195 families from its food pantry, in addition We Care receives a monthly delivery of food for the pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The NIFB is able to provide food to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores.

The month’s delivery included 2.5-ounce boxes of macaroni and cheese for 3 cents each, 12-ounce bags of veggie burgers for 18 cents each, and 4.5-ounce pouches of rice and sauce  for 6 cents each. In addition to the food that We Care purchases with the donations, the food pantry also receives food that is provided for free as part of the Emergency Food Program.

The EFP provided cranberry sauce, beef stew, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, canned pork, chicken leg quarters, ham, orange juice, whole chickens and seasoned pork patties. This month, food was also provided through the TANF program, which included eggs, jelly, spaghetti sauce and spaghetti.

Upcoming Fill the Pantry sponsors include the family and friends of Robyn White and New Community Christian Church and LyondellBasell employees.
