ICS holds 22nd annual math contest

Morris team captures third overall at March 7 competition

Six schools participated at Immaculate Conception School’s 22nd annual math contest on Thursday, March 7.

The math contest consisted of an individual test and a team test at the sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade levels. Teams had a maximum of five members at each grade level.

Participating schools were, Gardner, Cross Lutheran of Yorkville, St. Dominic of Bolingbrook. St. Joseph of Bradley, Maternity, BVM, of Bourbonnais, and Immaculate Conception.

Awards were presented to those who received the top three individual scores in each grade, to the top three teams in each grade, and to the overall top three schools by point total.

Those receiving individual awards in sixth grade were Parima Michareune of St. Dominic, first; Gillian McDermott of Maternity, second, and Emma Konicek of Cross Lutheran, second; and Emma Chinski of St. Joseph, third, and Nevada Shepherd of Maternity, third. In seventh grade, Jeremy Schwarz of Cross Lutheran was first; Lauren Daffenberg of Cross Lutheran was second; and Sam O’Connor of Maternity, third.

Also from Maternity, Tommy Maly placed first in eighth grade, Zachary Verghese placed second and Madison Gonski was third.

In the sixth-grade team category, St. Dominic was first, Maternity was second and Cross Lutheran was third. In seventh-grade team category, Cross Lutheran was first, Maternity was second, and Immaculate Conception, third, in seventh grade.

The eighth-grade team from Maternity was first, the team from Cross Lutheran was second, and the team from St. Joseph was third.

The overall school first place award was presented to Maternity. Cross Lutheran was second and Immaculate Conception was third.

Elaine Virgo is the sixth-grade math coach.  Janine Petric is the seventh- and eighth-grade coach. Virgo coordinated the tally room. Joseph Petric tabulated the final scores. Faculty, staff and parents of the math team students scored tests and served the visitors from the participating schools. Kim DesLauriers, IC principal, presented the awards.
