Allows calculations beyond three decimal points

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Working to lower property taxes for families across Illinois, State Rep. Kate Cloonen (D-Kankakee) advanced a measure out of the House Revenut Committee Thursday.

The legislation allows property taxes to be calculated beyond three decimal points to assure assessments are as close to the levy as possible.

“Residents across our district are still struggling during these difficult times, and it is my goal to help ease the financial burden in any way possible,” Cloonen said.

“This measure will make certain property tax bills are as close to the levy as possible without exceeding it. Now is the time to take action and help our communities come out of this recession.”

Cloonen is the chief sponsor of House Bill 189.

Currently, property tax bills are rounded up after three decimal places, often costing tax payers more than the actual levy.

Cloonen acted quickly to draft legislation correcting this unfavorable calculation method and potentially lowering property tax bills for families across Illinois.

“This is a small correction that can go a long way toward saving families money,” said Cloonen. “As I go door to door, I have heard from countless residents about the struggles to make ends meet. While it may seem like only a small savings, every dollar counts. I will continue to push for legislation that helps ease the financial strains placed on our communities.”
