Military service not sole vocation worthy of respect, elected office

I recently received campaign literature in the mail from Morris mayoral candidate John Brooks. In one enclosure, he boasts in detail about his military career. In the other enclosure, there is a clear implication that his rival candidates for mayor are unworthy of public office because they “...never served a day in their life.”

This would mean that 90 percent of the people in this country are also unworthy.

I get the impression that Mr. Brooks does not even think non-military people should be able to vote.

Our combat veterans deserve our gratitude and respect for risking their lives to preserve our way of life and American values. But one of the most time-honored American values is that America has no privileged class.  Unlike other countries, there is no royalty in America, no aristocracy, no group that has the right to look down on other citizens.

The American way is that every person in this country is equal under the law and presumed to be equally deserving of respect, regardless of their amount of wealth, occupation or station in life.

Of course, there are many in America that reject this value and think they are “better than,” such as some politicians, celebrities and wealthy individuals. I would add Mr. Brooks to this list.

He apparently believes he is entitled to demean those who picked careers as butchers or firemen, instead of the military, as second-class citizens.

The last thing we need in Morris is another public servant who feels superior to the rest of us. If you want to help veterans, write a letter to your Senator or representative, urging them to vote for a bill to give assistance to returning veterans for education, training and assistance in finding employment. Do NOT vote for John Brooks.
