Owner vows to rebuild ‘Roots’

Salon running from alternate location

Roots Hair Studio in Morris is rebuilding following the fire Saturday that destroyed it.

“We are rebuilding,” said Owner Jonelle Marie Carter Tuesday. “But we don’t have a timetable yet for when it will be done.”

Until it is, Carter said Roots will be operating out of A New U salon at 108 W. Washington St., Morris.

“They’ve opened their doors to us to work until our studio is rebuilt,” Carter said. “They’ve been so gracious.”

Roots, located at 224 W. Washington St., sustained an estimated $40,000 in damages in the blaze.

No one was in the salon at the time of the fire. There were no injuries and the fire was ruled an accident.

In addition to A New U’s help, numerous community members took to Facebook in the wake of the blaze to offer support for the studio, which opened in 2010.

Carter said she was grateful for the community response.

“It’s very humbling,” she said. “It shows to me what our community is all about.

“Small communities come together.”

Carter said that clients can call the regular salon number at (815) 941-2923.
