Hazel Arlene Erickson

OTTAWA, Ill. — Mrs. Hazel Arlene Erickson, 97, of Ottawa, Ill., died Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Pleasant View Lutheran Home in Ottawa, Ill.

She was born Dec. 20, 1915, in Seneca, Ill., the daughter of the late Harvey and Sarah (Peterson) Varness.

She was member of the Fox River Lutheran Church in Norway, Ill., the Women’s Missionary Fellowship of the church, and the Sons of Norway. She loved her family, gardening, flowers, baking and, especially, her church.

Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis (Allen) Potter of Las Vegas, Nev., and Alverta Erickson of Peru, Ill.; five granddaughters, Julie (Tom) Cooper of Calif., Kristina (Mike) Roberts of Guam, Sheryl Potter of Nevada, Karen (Matt) Cox of Indiana, and Denise (Pat) Joyce of Illinois; and a brother, Hiram (Millie) Varness of Kankakee, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Abel M. Erickson; two sisters, Pearl Tesdall and Dorothy Varness; and a brother, Lowell Varness.

Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 12, at the Gabel-Dunn Funeral Home Ltd., 102 S. Johnson St., Newark, Ill. The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. Saturday, April 13, until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. in Fox River Lutheran Church, 2785 East U.S. 52, Sheridan, Ill. The Rev. Steve Papillion will officiate. Interment will take place at the Norway Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to either Fox River Lutheran Church or Pleasant View Lutheran Home.

Pallbearers will be Harvey Varness, Stanley Varness, Jim Tesdall, Alden Erickson, Randy Jackson and Steve Nieman.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Gabel-Dunn Funeral Home, Newark.
