Ghost tour reappears at Ammunition Plant

WILMINGTON, Ill. — Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie will present one of its popular tours, “Ghosts of the Ammunition Plant,” at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 20.

This tour will explain how the U.S. government acquired more than 36,000 acres of land to build an ammunition plant in the Wilmington/Elwood are, why this location was chosen, how the plant was built and how it operated?

The presentation will also teach about the deadly explosion during World War II, which shook Joliet and surrounding towns. Participants will tour the inside of one of the few remaining warehouses and an ammunition storage bunker. 

This tour will be conducted via car caravan through the use of personal vehicles and will travel over unimproved roads, including gravel and potholes. Plan to spend approximately three hours on this escorted tour.

All programs and events at Midewin are free and, unless otherwise stated, meet at the Welcome Center, the building with the three flagpoles in front, at 30239 S. Illinois 53, Wilmington, Ill. 

A short orientation will begin at 10 a.m. and the tour ends at approximately 1 p.m.
