DWIGHT, Ill. — Mr. Gilbert George Tyler, 83, of Naples, Fla., and formerly of Dwight, Ill., died late Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Naples Community Hospital.
Born Aug. 31, 1929, in Hinsdale, Ill., he was the son of Gilbert and Mary Alice (Flinn) Tyler.
On April 8, 1947, he joined the U.S. Navy as an Apprentice Seaman in Joliet, Ill.
On April 12, 1950, he married Betty Ruth Carlson in Coal City, Ill. They spent the first 21 years of their marriage traveling to various locations with the Navy. Many years were spent in the Norfolk, Va., area.
In December 1969, he retired from the Navy with the rank of ENC (Chief Engineman). They settled in Dwight and he worked for the next 20 years in maintenance at Alumax in Morris before retiring to Florida in 1992.
Betty preceded him in death on Jan. 24, 2000, and he remarried Aug. 6, 2001, to Mary Theresa Haughey Noldan in Naples, Fla.
Surviving are his wife, Theresa; two daughters, Michelle Tyler of Fort Myers, Fla., and Georgia Reed of Monroe, N.C.; three sons, Michael of St. Petersburg, Fla., Gilbert of Moore Haven, Fla., and Richard of Joliet; three grandchildren, Tina Pennington of Moyock, N.C., Sean Holohan of Dwight, and Becki Kugler of Sanford, Mich.; and four great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife; one daughter, Mary Alice, at birth; and his sister, Joyce Mack.
There will be a private memorial ceremony for the family.
Cremation is being handled by Mullins Memorial Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Cape Coral, Fla.
