A 28-year-old Morris man was charged with DUI Monday after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase in an attempt to escape arrest.

Sean S. Smith, of 545 High St., allegedly struck a mailbox along U.S. 6, east of Marseilles. La Salle County Sheriff’s police attempted to stop him, but Smith sped up and led them on a pursuit into Grundy County.

In addition to DUI, Smith was charged with aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude police (excess of 100 MPH), improper lane usage, disobeying stop signs, reckless driving and obstructing police.

Smith crashed into a post on Seneca Road, near Interstate 80, and attempted to escape on foot.

He was arrested by Grundy County Sheriff’s police, who also charged him with leaving the scene of a vehicle-damage accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Smith was taken to La Salle County jail.
