CHANNAHON — The Channahon Grade School District 17 board gave Pioneer Path School assistant principal Kathy Bisch a promotion to principal. The vote was unanimous April 22, and Bisch’s salary was approved at $67,920 per year plus TRS.
Angela Stallion has served as principal for both Pioneer Path and N.B. Galloway Schools for four years. The district then brought Bisch in two years ago as assistant principal with the goal of training to eventually assume a principal’s position.
“I think Kathy has proven herself to be highly effective,” Stallion said after Monday’s school board meeting. “She is ready for that position.”
Stallion said she enjoys working with Bisch and that the two will continue to work closely together to continue the smooth transition for students from one grade school to the next. With the promotion, Bisch’s duties will increase to include management of the building, taking charge of professional development and assuming all leadership roles with staff.
The board also created a new teaching position. The district will post the opening for the position of instructional technology resource teacher.
Superintendent Dr. Karin Evans described the position as having the goal of providing effective support for curriculum and technology integration within the district’s four schools and in classrooms.
“It’s a very, very needed position,” Evans told school board members, “and an important one.”
Evans said having the technology resource leader will help ensure students will have a solid foundation for eventual transition into the workplace or college after high school.
The school board also approved administrators’ salaries for the upcoming school year. They received raises averaging 2.75 percent.
Dean and Athletic Director Bradley Homerding will make $59,791 plus TRS; N.B. Galloway principal Angela Stallion will make $83,953 plus $3,000 stipend for MAP assessment coordinator plus TRS; Three Rivers School principal Susan Kavich will make $91,063 plus TRS; and Channahon Junior High principal Chad Uphoff will make $98,895 plus TRS.
Additional personnel matters were approved as follows: Janice Sartori was hired as a substitute bus driver at $37.50/run; Nicole DeMaine was transferred from kindergarten to second grade teacher at N.B. Galloway; Lisa Prince, teacher aide at Pioneer Path, will retire at the end of May; Shanna Deshotel resigned as night custodian; day custodian Ben Johnson will take family medical leave from April 17 through approximately May 7; and junior high science teacher Erin Bettenhausen will begin family medical leave/extended unpaid leave around Nov. 11, 2013 and return around April 1, 2014.
All district support staff were also given 2.75-percent raises for 2013-14, and a new wage rate scale was approved, leaving most positions at the same salaries, but increasing the following maximum wages by five percent: Class I administrative assistant, Class IV office aide, teacher aide, school nurse and technology director.
There were several changes in pay for bus drivers, as the district brought the rates more in line with neighboring districts. Increasing by 2.75 percent will be the rates for bus drivers and substitute bus drivers ($36.70 per run), special education summer bus drivers ($72.95 per day); and the four-hour bus driver refresher course ($37.75).
Increasing by more than 2.75 percent will be driver training ($15/hour); trips ($15/hour plus an additional $15/trip for travel north of I-55); $30 for trips in Minooka and Channahon.
The school board also approved the lowest bid for work on Three Rivers and N.B. Galloway Schools’ entrances to enhance security. For $134,700, Cosgrove Construction of Joliet, Ill., will perform the work this summer, beginning with Galloway. The costs do not include architect fees. The district will receive a $50,000 government grant to help defray costs for the work.
