CHANNAHON — Marianne Brown credits The Feed Loft’s origins to her rabbits. Two rabbits, to be exact, which then became 100 rabbits.
Not long after, The Feed Loft was born.
Since then, the Channahon business has established itself as unique, longtime community presence, featuring an 8,400-square-foot store with a variety of pet food, pet supplies, tropical fish and fishing bait and tackle.
Brown, who owns The Feed Loft with her husband Greg, emphasizes her business thrives off of exceptional customer service, a family-oriented atmosphere and weekly updates to its inventory.
How did The Feed Loft get started?
In 1985, we purchased two rabbits as pets. Our rabbitry grew to 100. We contacted a feed company in Indiana to purchase rabbit feed. Our herd became popular through American Rabbit Breeders Association due to the first-place showings we were winning.
What makes The Feed Loft unique?
Our customer service and knowledge. Most of our employees have been with us for five years or more.
The Feed Loft touts its goal of treating customers like family. How does The Feed Loft accomplish this goal and why do you make this goal a priority?
I was raised “treat others how you would want to be treated.” Our employees are respected by myself and Greg. We acknowledge our employees to our customers and reward them verbally. We are truly a family unit.
How does The Feed Loft keep up on what is new and popular in the pet world?
We attend numerous conventions, read many written publications, research the internet and take advice from our vendors.
How often does The Feed Loft update its inventory? And what are some of the products that have just been introduced to the store?
We update our inventory weekly. It would require a full page to list our new products because we update all our departments. Our most recent new pet food is American Natural. The complete line is made in America using American meats.
As the fishing season begins, what tips does The Feed Loft offer to area fishermen?
Have your licenses and stamps in your possession. The DNR can confescate all your tackle and bait if you don’t have your licenses and stamps. Don’t forget, our 24-hour bait vending machine is open for the season.
What kinds of animals are available at The Feed Loft? Of these animals, what are the most popular?
We were a full-line animal retail until a year ago, because after two years of research, we were more eager to encourage potential buyers to contact shelters for their pet purchases. Today, we sell tropical fish and feeder rodents. We still will special order other domestic pets on an as-needed basis.
