On Friday, April 26, members of New Community Christian Church donated $650 to help We Care of Grundy County purchase 6,875 pound of food from Northern Illinois Food Bank.
The church also provided volunteers to unload the truck and stock the shelves of the food pantry.
During the month since the previous Fill the Pantry, We Care had helped 247 families from its food pantry.
“We are pleased to be able to help replenish the pantry, especially during this time of great need in our community due to the recent flooding,” said Julie Lardi of New Community Christian Church.
We Care receives a monthly delivery of food for the pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The NIFB is able to provide food to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores.
The month’s delivery included 10-ounce cans of enchilada sauce for 4 cents each, 8-ounce boxes of wheat crackers for 3 cents each, and 5-ounce boxes of cereal bars for 9 cents each.
In addition to the food that We Care purchases with the donations, the food pantry also receives food that is provided for free as part of the Emergency Food Program.
The EFP provided five-pound bags of russet potatoes, canned carrots, turkey breasts, whole turkeys, grapefruit juice, instant mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, spaghetti sauce, chicken leg quarters, ham, orange juice, whole chickens, and seasoned pork patties.
This month, food was also provided through the TANF program, which included apple juice, baking mix and canned carrots.
Upcoming Fill the Pantry sponsors include LyondellBasell employees, Peace Lutheran Church Youth Group, and Walmart.
