Lady Panthers smoke St. Anne for regional title

SOUTH WILMINGTON  — Top-seeded Gardner-South Wilmington took care of business in the championship game at its own Class 1A softball regional Saturday morning, defeating St. Anne 10-0 in six innings.

The Lady Panthers scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, with Becca Bernardy and Miranda Residori delivering RBI hits, and never looked back. They added another run in the second, four in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the sixth to end the game via the run rule.

GSW pitcher Emily Foley never let a St. Anne player reach second base. She took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and finished with a line that included two hits allowed, no walks and six strikeouts.

Foley aided her own cause with a pair of triples, a walk, three RBI and two runs. Bernardy went 4-for-4 and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. GSW totaled 14 hits.

The regional championship is the first for the Lady Panthers since 2008. They will play Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at the Iroquois West Sectional, held at White Field at Durham Park in Onarga, versus the winner of the Westminster Christian Regional.

A complete story will appear in Tuesday's edition of the Morris Daily Herald.
