Saratoga adds softball

The Saratoga Elementary Dist. 60C school board voted Monday to add softball to its 2013-14 sports program.

Principal Joe Zweeres estimated it would cost between $5,000 and $7,000 to implement, but said there was strong student interest.

Zweeres said a survey indicated 23 fifth graders, 19 sixth graders, and 15 seventh graders would be interested in trying out. Many currently play or have played in the past elsewhere.

Zweeres said it could promote school engagement.

Board Member Tracy Lawyer voted against the plan, saying it is not the right time financially.

“I don’t think now’s the right time to invest in a new sport,” Lawyer said. “If we have the money, we should invest in education.”

Board Member Scott Thorson disagreed with Lawyer.

“I feel like the benefit of adding a sport for girls is there,” Thorson said.

The motion passed with one no vote. Ginger Jones and Vice President Mark Overbeck were not present.
