On Friday, May 24, LyondellBasell employees donated $750 to help We Care of Grundy County purchase over 6,394 pounds of food from Northern Illinois Food Bank.
The company also provided 12 volunteers to unload the truck and stock the shelves of We Care’s Food Pantry.
“This year’s Global Care and Earth Day activities raised over $7,000 for We Care’s Fill the Pantry program, which was an all-time record,” said Larry Zazeski of LyondellBasell. “Since 2005, the Morris plant employees and company match have donated more than $28,000 to this program, resulting in over 100 tons of food for the pantry.”
We Care receives a monthly delivery of food for its pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The NIFB is able to provide food to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores, such as 13.6-ounce boxes of oats and honey cereal for 20 cents each, 12-ounce cans of evaporated milk for 13 cents each, and 12-count boxes of toaster pastries for 27 cents each.
In addition to the food that We Care purchases with the donations, the food pantry also receives food that is provided for free as part of the Emergency Food Program. The EFP provided great northern beans, peanut butter, canned mixed fruit, grapefruit juice, instant mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, spaghetti sauce, chicken leg quarters, ham, orange juice, whole chickens and seasoned pork patties.
During the month since the previous Fill the Pantry, We Care helped feed 262 families from its food pantry.
Upcoming Fill the Pantry sponsors include Peace Lutheran Church Youth Group, Walmart and LyondellBasell.
