Omicron awards two $1,000 scholarships

Cynthia Christensen, administrator at South Wilmington Grade School and professional affairs chairperson, and Janna Greanias, mathematics teacher at Ottawa High School and personalgrowth and services chairperson, presented the 2013 Grant-in-Aid recipients.

Both scholarships were in the amount of $1,000.

Melissa Gretz, a junior at Illinois State University who is majoring in special education, was the recipient for the personal growth and services Grant-in-Aid.

Melissa spoke about her dreams in the field of education. Her application will also be sent to Lambda State for consideration of further grants at the state level.

The awardee of the Omicron Chapter Recruitment Grant was high school senior Maydson Toynton, who attended Ottawa High School. Toynton spoke about her future plans and her desire to teach one day.

Madyson’s application will be sent on to be judged for a Lambda State Florence A. Cook Recruitment Grant.

The May 21, 2013 meeting of Omicron Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma Society International began with a Celebration of Life Memorial Service, honoring deceased members Maye Sebby, Margaret Bednarik and Mary Jane Mess. Membership Sub-Chair and Necrology representative Heather Reardon, Membership Chairperson Tracey O’Fallon and committee members Jane Charbonneau and Ellyn Hylla conducted the ceremony.

Tracey O’Fallon read the tribute prepared by Margaret Bybee for Maye Sebby.  Kay Carlson spoke for Margaret Bednarik and Heather Reardon for Mary Jane Mess.

The ceremony of roses and candles followed. Members sang “How Great Thou Art,” accompanied by Patty Hopkins on the keyboard. It was a beautiful tribute to three outstanding teachers, who gave so much of themselves to their students, churches and communities.

Martha’s Books has received the Martha Slyter Grant and will be ordering materials for the Under His Wings Project.

Bev Madsen should be contacted concerning any financial issues for 2013-14.  Patty Hopkins still has cookbooks available. There are IRTA grants available for projects in the classroom.

Beth Gealow, Ottawa High School math teacher,  will be extended an invitation for membership in Omicron. Personal Growth and Services Chair Janna Greanias reminded members to collect change for the food pantries and to watch for school supply sales this summer.
