Missing Kansas couple found safe in Michigan

Elderly pair was headed for Dwight, Ill.

(MCT) — How and why is still a mystery, but a missing elderly Garnett, Kan., couple headed to Illinois has been found — in upper Michigan.

“My son just texted me and said they found them in the Upper Peninsula,” said Beth Selanders of Overland Park, Kan., former daughter-in-law to Vernon Hunt, 91, and his wife, Goldie, 81.

Law enforcement officials began looking for the couple, who left their home in Anderson County, Kansas, on Monday, after family members raised concerns when the couple had yet to reach their destination about 510 miles away in Dwight, Ill.

They were found in Mio, Mich. — 410 miles north of Dwight.

Wednesday, the Hunt’s son, Jay Selanders, set out in a small aircraft to help search for his parents, who were presumed to have taken their black Chrysler along Interstate 70 from Kansas City to St. Louis and then were to take Interstate 55 north to Dwight.

Beth Selanders said the couple reportedly was found by Michigan police.

“Why a 91-year-old and an 81-year-old took off in the first place is beyond me,” Beth Selanders said.
