Childerguild sponsors breastfeeding workshop for healthcare professionals

Published: Tuesday, June 25, 2013 9:38 a.m. CDT

NEW LENOX, Ill. — Childerguild, the volunteer auxiliary that supports Silver Cross’ Women and Infant Services Birthing Center, recently sponsored a Breastfeeding Workshop at the hospital.

Over 70 healthcare professionals attended the free program — Strategies to Increase Exclusive Breast-feeding Rates in the Hospital Setting. The purpose of the Breastfeeding Workshop was to provide more information on evidence-based breastfeeding management techniques to increase breastfeeding rates at hospital discharge.

“By increasing hospital breastfeeding rates the health of babies and their mothers is increased, and the environment also benefits,” said Katy Lebbing, international board certified lactation consultant for Silver Cross Hospital.

The workshop speakers, Beth Seidel and Janet Tolley, are from hospitals who have added the strategies and techniques taught at the workshop at their own hospitals with outstanding success. Further, both speakers work at the first two hospitals in Illinois who obtained Baby-Friendly certification that increased their exclusive breastfeeding rates.

A wide variety of healthcare professionals attended the Breastfeeding Workshop including employees, physicians, nurses, registered dietitians, international board certified lactation consultants, and breastfeeding peer counselors from Silver Cross Hospital and other hospitals and organizations in the Chicagoland area.

Research shows that the best feeding option globally is the initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour of life, exclusive breastfeeding for a full six months, and continued breastfeeding with solid foods added through the second year or beyond.

Breastfeeding improves short and long term maternal and child health; and thus contributes to the attainment of the Millennium Development Goal to Reduce Child Mortality and Improve Maternal Health, to which many countries and agencies are committed.

About the Women and Infant Birthing Center

Silver Cross has brought together cutting-edge medical technology with spa-like amenities to make the birthing experience all the more memorable.

On Feb. 26, 2012, the new Birthing Center opened at the Silver Cross Replacement Hospital, located at I-355 and U.S. 6, in New Lenox. The Center has 12 luxurious birthing suites designed for labor, delivery and recovery so parents can have the convenience of staying in the same room through recovery followed by a stay in one of 30 private mother-baby suites.

Each private suite is fully-equipped with a bathroom with a shower to help with labor pains, blanket warmer, refrigerator, wireless Internet access, 30-inch flat screen TV system, and a comfortable sofa-sleeper so family members can stay around the clock.

Furthermore, a variety of pain relief methods are available 24 hours a day provided by an anesthesiologist.  And for deliveries requiring surgery, there are two complete cesarean suites. Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago neonatologists and pediatric hospitalist continue to be onsite 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

And if needed, Lurie Children’s Hospital pediatric cardiologists are available to analyze a baby’s echocardiogram in real time through a video linkage with Silver Cross. About Childerguild

Founded in 1910, by 13 benevolent women who had no children of their own, Childerguild was formed to benefit the obstetrics and pediatrics departments at Silver Cross Hospital.

In the early years, Childerguild raised funds through private donations and by hosting card parties. The members took a hands-on approach to this organization by sewing layettes and clown dolls for the pediatric patients at Silver Cross.  During the war years, members knitted sweaters for the military and gave financial support to the American Red Cross, Navy League and the Salvation Army.  As ardent supporters of the children in our community, Childerguild also made contributions to the Herald News free milk fund and the local community chest.

Today, Childerguild raises funds by hosting their annual Ball and by operating the hospital’s gift shop.  The Childerguild Gift Shop is open Monday through Saturday and is located in the main lobby at Silver Cross Hospital.  Customers are offered many unique items in the Childerguild Gift Shop, which features exclusive gifts, jewelry, unique handbags, toys, books and darling baby clothes.  For more information, call the Silver Cross Volunteer Services Department at (815) 300-7117.
