Morris man struck by train early Tuesday

Pedestrian, 22, sustained 'critical injuries'

A 22-year-old Morris man is in serious condition at Loyola University Medical Center after being struck by a freight train in Morris early Tuesday morning.

Emergency personnel were called to a train-versus-pedestrian accident at the Grant Street railroad tracks at about 4:10 a.m., said Chief Tracey Steffes of the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District.

“Crews treated and transported the individual to Morris Hospital,” he said.

The man was struck by a freight train, said Steffes, and was alert while being transported to Morris Hospital.

“He was in critical condition with very critical injuries,” said Steffes of the man’s injuries at the scene.

Anne Dillon, director of Media Services for Loyola, confirmed Tuesday afternoon the man had been transported to Loyola and was in serious condition.

Steffes said he was unaware of the circumstances of what the man was doing on the railroad tracks Tuesday morning.

The train was stopped until another crew could arrive to take over the train, according to the Morris police department. Additional information from the police was limited Tuesday.
