Family-oriented fair about spending time with friends

Traditions, new offerings combine to keep Grundy County Fair entertaining

Burdette Carter spent a lot of time on the fair circuit showing livestock before he was put in charge of the Grundy County Fair.

Now, as he and his crew work on this year’s fair, he said that’s still his favorite part of the fair.

“Fairs have been part of my life,” Carter said. “I like the livestock shows the best.”

Still, Carter said, there is more than the livestock to get excited about.

In addition to fair standards like carnival rides and games, the tractor pull and the Miss Grundy County Fair pageant, there will be some new features at the Grundy County Fair in Morris. The event begins Wednesday and runs through Sunday.

This year’s event will include a Johnny Cash/June Carter Cash tribute, as well as professional wrestling.

June’s Got the Cash, a Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash tribute show, will take the Main Grandstand Stage at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, in advance of the annual fireworks show.

“I’m excited about this show,” Carter said, adding that he once saw the real Johnny and June perform.

The next night, July 4, Blitz Pro Wrestling will hit the mats at Exhibition Hall for the first “Grundy County Rumble.”

“It’s an all free show,” Carter said.

Other events on Wednesday include the Miss Grundy County Fair Queen pageant, the Grundy Bank-City of Morris Fireworks Extravaganza, and a performance by Elvis impersonator Rick Dunham, aka “Elvis Himselvis.”

“It’s a family affair,” Carter said of the fair. “It’s economical entertainment.”

The fair runs Wednesday through Sunday and includes stock car racing, a full day of kids’ events and I-MOD racing.

Carter said the food is an attraction itself.

“We try to make sure every vendor is selling something different,” Carter said. “We like to have a good variety.”

But for Carter, the people and the sense of community are the most important aspects of the fair.

During set-up, he said, a crew comprised of adults and high school students has worked hard to ensure the 109th Grundy County Fair is a success.

“The younger guys learn some work ethic from the older guys,” Carter said.

The event itself, Carter said, is about seeing familiar faces.

“You get to see a lot of old friends,” Carter said. “And you get to meet a lot of new friends.”
