Advisory committees to meet at end of July

Sessions set July 23 & 24 in Kankakee

KANKAKEE, IL – To continue encouraging local involvement and participation in the legislative process, state Representative Kate Cloonen is inviting residents to her second round of Citizen Advisory Committee meetings in late July.

“These committees are part of my continuing goal to be accessible to the communities I represent and to stay informed on the issues that matter to them,” said Cloonen.

“The advisory committee meetings are a great opportunity to hear directly from constituents. This second installment is also a good way to talk about some of the legislation that was debated in Springfield during the legislative session.”

Cloonen is encouraging local professionals, as well as constituents with direct knowledge or interest within the committee’s particular fields to join her advisory committees. Participants do not need to be an expert in the field of any advisory committee.

Cloonen’s advisory committees will meet on July23 and 24 at the following times in the Kankakee Public Library’s 3rdFloor Conference Room:

• Agriculture- Tuesday, July 23, 9 – 9:50a.m.
• Education- Tuesday, July 23, 10 – 10:50 a.m.
• Healthcare – Tuesday, July 23 11 – 11:50 a.m.
• Public Safety – Tues-day, July 23 noon – 12:50 p.m.
• Economic Develop-ment – Wednesday, July 24, 9 – 9:50 a.m.
• Veterans – Wednesday, July 24, 10 – 10:50a.m.
• Seniors –  Wednesday, July 24, 11 – 11:50 a.m.

“Citizen participation is key to improving our community and state.  The conversations I have at these meetings will help guide me in the policy we create in Springfield. I welcome the participation of anyone interested,”Cloonen added.

Salary cut for state officials is now law

Working to continue to improve Illinois’ financial standing, a measure backed by state Representative Kate Cloonen cutting legislators pay has been signed into law by the Governor.

Cloonen’s measure will reduce the pay of members of the General Assembly and other elected and appointed officials by 10 percent.

“Across the state, residents are being forced to do more with less because of harsh economic times and legislators should be doing the same,” Cloonen said. “Tightening our belts is important and the right thing to do.

“Since taking office, I have called for legislators to take a pay cut and I refused a legislator pension. It is our responsibility to lead by example in these difficult economic times and I am glad to see this measure signed into law.”

Cloonen is a co-sponsor of House Bill 1441, which cuts pay for members of the General Assembly by 10 percent, beginning in 2015. The bill also prohibits a cost of living adjustment for any official whose pay was set by the Compensation Review Board, which includes members of the General Assembly, state’s attorneys, constitutional officers and several appointed officials.

Cloonen has constantly called for legislators to take a pay cut since taking office in January.

“My constituents have had to sacrifice so much and I think it’s significant that their legislators make sacrifices too,” said Cloonen. “The signing of HB1441 demonstrates the same fiscal control that hard-working families across Illinois are showing. This is a good step towards getting the state back on the right track.
