Mrs. Margaret A. McCarty, 88, of Morris, Ill., and formerly of Herrin, Ill., passed peacefully, with her loving family by her side, at Walnut Grove Village in Morris on July 6, 2013.

Margaret was born Sept. 19, 1924, in Herrin, Ill., to Louis and Fannie (Procarione} Rolando. She married John “Jack” McCarty on Nov. 21, 1945, in Tennessee, immediately after he was discharged from serving in World War II.

He preceded her in death on July 20, 1985, after nearly 40 years of marriage.

She was a 1942 graduate of Herrin High School and went back to school after her family was grown to study nursing. She completed her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) degree at John A. Logan College in 1974.

She loved her work at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Marion, Ill., where she served as an emergency room nurse.

She volunteered in numerous local organizations and charities, and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin.

She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who loved to sew, bake and play pinochle, and always looked forward to spending time with family and friends. She and her husband had a great passion for travel.

She is survived by her sons, Ted A. McCarty and Terry J. McCarty, both of Lakeside, Calif., and her daughter and son-in-law, Gary and Toni Rockis of Morris; three grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Christine (Ryan) Under of St. Louis, Mo., Laura McCarty, also of St. Louis, but currently attending graduate school in Tubingen, Germany, and Suzanne (Brian) Poole of Morris; three great-grandchildren and great step-grandchildren, Abigail Linder of St. Louis, and Avery and Easton Poole of Morris; one sister, Jean M. Vecellio of Morris, and formerly of Herrin; and nephews and a great-niece.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Johnny and Louis “Shorty” Rolando, both of Herrin, Ill.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home in Morris. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 12, at Immaculate Conception Church In Morris, with Father Ed Howe officiating.

Cremation rights will be accorded and a private interment will be held on Friday, July 12, at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill., where her husband is also laid to rest.
