KANKAKEE, Ill. – State Rep. Kate Cloonen is calling on the governor to sign Senate Bill 20 into law in order to help finalize the long-awaited South Suburban Airport.

The project would allow the Illinois Department of Transportation to engage in a public-private partnership to build and operate the new airport.

“One of my top priorities as state representative is to spur economic development and bring good paying, quality jobs to our area,” said Cloonen.

“This measure has the potential to generate 3,000 jobs in the first year of operation, jobs our area desperately need. This legislation will address the long-debated issue of governance, and it will help to stimulate our economy. I am urging the governor to sign this bill immediately.”

Senate Bill 20, co-sponsored by Cloonen, allows IDOT to enter into public-private agreements to develop, finance, construct, manage, operate and maintain the airport in Will County.

According to IDOT’s Division of Aeronautics, the airport is estimated to generate 3,000 jobs directly and indirectly, during its first year of operation. The airport has the potential to bring 15,000 jobs by its 15th year of operation.

“This project has been debated and caused agony for years and I am proud to help take a strong step toward finally making it a reality,” said Cloonen. “I worked closely with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to find a workable solution that brings jobs to our community.

“I will continue to push for responsible job creation measures that improve the economic climate in our community and across Illinois.”
