The Coal City Cougar 12-under baseball team recently traveled to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and participated in the Ripken Experience Baseball Tournament. The team played six games returned having had a great time, losing to eventual tourney champion Edwardsville by one run.
“This was a great experience, Coal City coach Jerry McDowell said. “We played very good defense the entire tourney with only seven errors and we were competitive every game. The teams we played from southern Georgia and Tampa play year round baseball so it was nice as a northern team to compete against these academies “

A good pitching performance by Justin Dabulskis and some good plays on defense by infielder Alex Friddle kept this game close .
The Cougars trailed 1-0 after four innings as Dabulskis allowed only two hits through the first four innings. Brett Blecha and Dan Caruso led the hitting.
Tampa Bay was coached by former Yankees first round pick Tony Morrison and by Kevin Carter, who played 14 years in the NFL.

The Cougars rallied for two runs late in the game but just fell short as the winning runs were stranded on base.
Connar Skubic had a run-scoring double. Drew Moir and Dabulskis each had hits and runs scored. Alex Friddle reached base three times on walks.

The Cougars scored three runs early and then rallied behind Brenden Nevin’s run scoring double that tied the game and Bubba Chervany eventually scored the game winning run in the last inning.
Mickey McDowell was the winning pitcher and Dustyn Muzzarelli picked up the save.

Dustyn Muzzarelli had two singles and threw two runners out stealing.
Mason Mulcahy and Mickey McDowell each had a hit and run scored.
Ryan Wasielewski made a nice defensive play at first base to save two runs from scoring.

Cresskill New Jersey 4
Brett Blecha was the winning pitcher and Brenden Nevin picked up the save.
Connar Skubic , Mason Mulcahy , Mickey McDowell and Nevin all had run-scoring singles. Drew Moir and Bubba Chervany each had nice plays in the outfield to save runs.
Coal City 2
The Cougars lost a heartbreaker to the eventual champs also from Illinois.
Edwardsville came into the game with a 47-5 record.
Justin Dabulskis pitched the entire game and gave up only four hits and one earned run.
Drew Moir and Mickey McDowell each had run scoring singles. Dustyn Muzzarelli had an RB I and threw out two more runners stealing.
Leading hitters in the tourney were Drew Moir , Connar Skubic and Mickey McDowell. Dan Caruso had the highest on base percentage.
