Alleged Buhrman accomplice in custody

Brittain arrested in Venezuela; Buhrman remains on the lam

WHEATON — An alleged accomplice to Michael Buhrman, the former nuclear reactor operator turned fugitive carjacker, was booked into DuPage County Jail last week after being arrested in Venezuela.

Landon Brittain, 27, has been charged with aggravated hijacking, vehicular hijacking and two counts of obstruction of justice for his role in a May 2012 carjacking in Woodridge.

He is being held on $1 million bond and will next appear in court Aug. 12.

Brittain and Buhrman had worked as senior reactor operators at Dresden Nuclear Generating Station in Morris.

Buhrman, 32, formerly of Coal City, was arrested after donning a mask, pointing a gun at a woman outside a Kohl’s store, and stealing her car. He was charged with aggravated hijacking, vehicular hijacking and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon.

After posting bond, Buhr-man was placed under home confinement and GPS monitoring because prosecutors believed him to be a flight risk.

In September 2012, Buhrman apparently removed his ankle bracelet monitor, fled and has not been seen since.

He was convicted in absentia in April and in May was sentenced to 40 years in prison if he is found.
Brittain was reported missing in October 2012, shortly after his former co-worker fled.

He was arrested in Venezuela on unknown charges and was booked into DuPage County Jail July 17.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Brittain was allegedly present for the carjacking and is said to have “implicated himself.”

Buhrman remains at large.

If found, Buhrman also faces a charge of violating his bail bond, a Class X felony.
